Barrier Island Sanctuary Field Trip

Today the boys went on a field trip to the Barrier Island Sanctuary.

They did a class on sea turtles, learning about reptiles, characteristics of sea turtles, and looking at the skulls of different species of sea turtles to figure out what they might eat.

Then they went outside to play a game to see which baby sea turtles would survive the elements to adulthood.

So the adults were lights on, plastic, tarpon, sharks, etc., and the kids were the sea turtles.

If they got past us they survived.

Next the kids had a scavenger hunt that they completed in their display area, the scavenger hunt was all about sea turtles.

Our group next learned how to fill out a sea turtle sighting sheet.  They measured their turtles carapace, the length and width, they had to determine what species of sea turtle they had, and they had to write down if the turtle had any signs of an injury.

Lastly, they did a beach clean-up.
