Book Character, Art Class, & a Walk

Posted by paggre | | Posted On Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 7:12 PM

Today with CHSF we had dress up as a favorite character from one of our favorite books.

Hezekiah of course was Robin Hood (in his self made hat).

Eli was a pirate from his Maisy's Pirate Adventure flip the flap book.

Maggie Beth was the "friendly lady bug" in the Grouchy Lady Bug book.

(They are so adorable!)

This was also the last day for this session for Eli's art class.  He showed off his work to us!

He did a fabulous job!

Valentine's Parties

Posted by paggre | | Posted On at 7:10 PM

This week has been a week of Valentine's parties.

One with Maggie Beth's preschool class.

And the other with a Facebook group that meets for LEGO club and Recess as homeschoolers.

So the Valentine love was shared.

Scanning Electron Microscope, Tornadoes, & the Weather

Posted by paggre | | Posted On Monday, February 13, 2012 at 6:43 PM

Alright so here is where my real geek factor comes out.  Does anyone know what the above instrument is?

Ahhhh, yes you answered correctly a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM for short).  It just costs 750,000 dollars.  It is a pretty amazing piece of machinery, magnifying extremely well and able to tell you what elements the specimen that you are looking at has inside it.

So this gentleman above showed us how to work the SEM and it was AWESOME!  This is actually one of I think he said of 4 places in the world that actually has this tool open to the public.

So there is my geek factor.  I bet you did not know I was such a nerd.

But the boys really enjoyed looking into the compound light microscope at specimens and also looking through the dissecting scopes.

The kids also were able to do all the experiments in the laboratory area.

They were so cute with their little goggles on.

Here Hezekiah and I made a stethoscope with a funnel, a tube and a coffee filter and he listened to the computerized heart beat.

There was a life sized game of Operation.

The kids watched the formation of tornadoes and used little helicopters to fly up into the tornado to see how the air is sucked up.

Maggie Beth and Hezekiah, my actors, tried their hand in front of the green screen doing a few weather forecasts.  They were so funny!

Gears, Dinos, & Mars Rover

There is also an area to see how gears work and a tree house, a place to walk underground to see what the sewers look like (of which Maggie dug).

There were also huge dinosaur skeletons.

When we got off the elevator at the 4th floor, Hezekiah bolted when he saw the dinosaurs and yelled, "DINOS!!!"

It was so funny, I am sure everyone even on the first floor heard that kid!

The kids also each had a turn to drive a rover.

Boats & Picking Oranges

Posted by paggre | | Posted On at 6:35 PM

At the Orlando Science Museum the kids absolutely loved playing and designing mazes for the boats to go through.

Maggie Beth loved it, she cried when we had to go to another exhibit.  They could have spent hours here alone.

The kids also really enjoyed picking oranges from a tree and filling a pallet and then putting them on the conveyor.

The little orange balls AKA oranges kept popping up onto the trees and then the kids got to "pick" them.

Collections: My Geek Factor

Posted by paggre | | Posted On at 11:34 AM

So I might be telling you what a "Nerd" I am, but I am definitely a sucker for collections.

I love the shadow boxed insect collections, rock collections, shell collections and I am afraid I have passed this love down to another, that being Eli.

I was so excited, as was he, to pull out drawer after drawer of insects trapped under glass.

So, I may be sharing my geek factor here, but just wait till you hear what else I was excited about..........soon my real geeky-ness will be revealed.
